Salvaged Finds

The medicine cabinet in need of medical attention

So I got this boring cabinet for $1, sturdy and really nothing wrong with it besides being filthy. It needed some love.

After experimenting with some Dixie Belle paint, my first attempt at “blending”. I really need to watch a few more videos of how to that! It may be easier on a larger piece.. time will tell. I added black wax and sunflower transfers to finish it up.

A labor of love this little cutie was. What did I learn along the way? That I really need to learn to take better photos and how to stage. Haha. Seriously, I learned a ton and most importantly enjoyed working on it. For starters, all those layers of paint and sealer made for a sticky door. So when I thought I was done, I had sanding and scraping to do.. and then to touch up and make sure the door opened smoothly. Secondly, the side glass panels could not be removed because the shelves are attached. I thought, no worries.. I’ll just shove some paper between the glass and shelves and remove when done. That was a wee bit frustrating… cuz you know that paper did not come out and you could see the mess it left behind from the outside. The wood on the outside of the sides was not originally there. I added those to cover up the horrific mess I had made. Thirdly, I learned that the sealer, although feels dry to touch. Well, it still can get stuck to things.

Not very bejeweling jewelry chest…. another $1 find

I completely forgot to take a before pic of this jewelry box. I hadn’t though of it until after I attempted to work on it. I tried filling in the hearts because I wasn’t in love with the look of them. I wanted to redo this for my niece who was turning 17.. I don’t see her often since she lives in another state. But when she finally gets it, she’ll be reminded of her wonderful aunt…lol… whenever she looks at it.

Wow.. I forgot how many tiny little pieces there were. And removing the felt was a complete pain in my arse…hehe. Again I tried to fill in the hearts. I need to remember to take more during pictures.. I painted the entire piece white with I believe folk art chalk paint. It looked shoddy. Then i walked away from it for months. My niece’s birthday has come and gone. It sat for months. Staring at me with it’s crap paint job. Reminding me how fugly it was.

After finding out what her favorite color is, I tackled the beast. I think she will love it. I had originally wanted to use wax , but when I was sanding I loved that the “fugly white” was peering out at me. I debated on changing out the glass to pieces with no etching, but i got lazy. I also do not like the stroke marks that you can see on the top left corner. After assembling again, naturally the door was too snug! Sanding and scraping and touched up again… will I ever learn??

I used my Dixie Belle paint and sealer for this. I stenciled with a pearl colored mouse, which I also applied to the knobs. Overall.. I learned a lot once again. She will finally get her jewelry cabinet in 2 weeks!

Boring Box

I got this box for something like 50 cents. It had no glass in the top. I had been wanting to try decoupaging and chicken wire. So this was the perfect small piece to practice a few new things.

I think it came out pretty good.
